“We” being those of us who have decided to hold the Olympic Games in China, are effectively condoning Chinas abysmal human rights violations.
Thousands suffer in silence while we are assured that China is cleaning up its act; in an effort to become a more open and democratic society. Our politicians are quite eager to believe China has changed its ways, as they have no interest other than trade with China.
Many will refuse to believe that our elected officials could be so callous, so heartless, yet they (our government) ignores the human rights abuses which continue today. If a citizen of China is found speaking out against the government or is deemed a threat or “enemy of the state” they may be taken away and beaten or tortured during questioning, and imprisoned for many years or indefinitely without any hope of justice.
Censorship is everywhere in China and the people are fed a steady diet of propaganda and lies. The Government of China is not accountable to its people, in fact, it controls every aspect of their lives; from how many children they may have, to what they are allowed to view on the world wide web.
We have condoned the human rights abuses by saying yes to China and giving them the honor of hosting the 2008 Olympics.
Many will defend the decision by saying it will help China to become democratic if we extend an open hand and make them feel inclusive with all the world and its diversity rather than excluding and/or alienating them.
China is competing on a much different level than those of us in the western world realize, just because they seem to be less restrictive when it comes to commerce and trade, ( bringing more prosperity to the people) does NOT mean they have given up control by any means!
All we have done by permitting the Olympic Games to be hosted by China is given them the green light to continue on, business a usual!
We have no integrity, we would rather our athletes win medals than oppose a dictatorship!
We make excuses for China by saying, “Why make our athletes pay by boycotting the games? They (our athletes) shouldn’t have to have their dreams ruined because of a foreign governments reprehensible human rights violations!” “It just isn’t fair!”
Sad, very sad when countries are more concerned with the rights of their athletes being able to compete and win gold medals, rather than the message we send by deliberately ignoring! thereby condoning! the torture, imprisonment and murder of people, just like you and me, who only want the same freedoms we so ignorantly take for granted!
The moment we stop defending human rights is when we start losing them ourselves!
Think about it!
