The “Tar Sands of Alberta” are leaving a toxic legacy! Canada is failing to protect its own environment by subsidizing its “dirty oil” project, rather than subsidize sustainable, renewable, energy sources.
If you are not Canadian , you may not be aware that the Prime Minister of Canada , Stephen Harper, hails from the Province of Alberta. It is quite evident that Harper is widely supported in the western provinces, excluding British Columbia.
Scientists have reported their findings to two environmental groups that “tailing ponds”, which are ponds of contaminated, toxic water are now leaching into the underground aquifers. It was also reported that contaminated waste water is also being dumped into rivers in the amount of more than 11 millions liters a day! This is truly shocking!
There are to date up to 130 million square kilometers of toxic waste water tailing ponds due to the tar sands project. Last year thousands of water fowl died after landing in these contaminated tailing ponds. The government of Alberta clearly does not care about the environmental degradation that is happening very quickly due to the tar sands project. In fact they coined the term “oil sands” as it sounds cleaner than “tar sands” but either way the destruction goes on.
The Canadian Government also does nothing to halt any future projects which are waiting for final approval by the Provincial Government. In fact, it is well known that not one project is denied when it comes to the tar sands.
It is Canada’s shame, we as Canadians must stop any further development projects of the Alberta Tar Sands. All countries must send a message to the Canadian Government by refusing any deals which involve buying Canada’s dirty oil! It is the only way to stop further development and environmental degradation.
